i’ve been thinking lately about why “au where midoriya doesn’t receive one for all and becomes a villain” bothers me so much

literally the only thing that makes midoriya give up being a hero, even for a moment, is All Might telling him he can’t be a hero– and then he rushes into danger to save Bakugou anyway
even if All Might hadn’t given him one for all, the entire point of his character is that he is, intrinsically, a hero. he doesn’t want to be a hero for the glory or to push his worldview; he wants to be a hero to help people. to inspire them the way all might inspired him. that’s literally the point.

to change that about him so intrinsically changes his characterization that it’s like
what’s the goddamn point
then it’s not midoriya anymore– it’s not the same character so it has no value as a “what if”

give me a midoriya who doesn’t receive a quirk and goes on to be a policeman or a teacher or a relief worker
hell, it may not even be my steez but even give me a quirkless vigilante Midoriya if you must

but like … why turn him into a villain for shock value? where’s the fun in that?
it’s not edgy or fun or mature to turn characters who believe in goodness and heroism into villains it’s just really childish and boring and i’m really tired of it

i mean you do whatever you want, have fun, you’re not really damaging my fun by having your fun somewhere else, but… idk man

and it’s not just bc the fact that one of the major points of the
series is that the power you earn is more important than the power you
have by luck, that it’s your actions and not your power that makes you a
hero, and that midoriya’s core and central character trait is his
desire to help other people even at the cost of his own goddamn bones

but it’s the like

changing the mechanics changes the message

it’s like when people in the undertale fandom missed the point of papyrus being the only character who mechanically cannot kill you and decided to make a bunch of aus where he kills you because lol that must be what he’s REALLY like when you REALLY push him and it’s just this boring edgy grimdark “everyone is a murderer if you push them hard enough” and i hate it
